8 September 1998 PR No: 046/98 23 COMPANIES RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS TRADE AWARDS FOR THE FIRST TIME 23 local and foreign companies received, for the first time, the Approved International Trader (AIT), Approved Oil Trader (AOT) and Approved International Shipping Enterprise (AIS) awards from Mr Lee Yock Suan, Minister of Trade and Industry, at a ceremony held today at Marina Mandarin Hotel. The number of new recipients is more than twice the number of first-time recipients last year. An additional 15 companies also received an extension of their AIT/AOT/AIS status. (Please refer to the Annex 1 for a list of the recipients)
These awards are administered by the Singapore Trade Development Board (TDB) and are aimed at attracting major international trading and maritime companies to set up their regional operations in Singapore. Qualifying companies enjoy a concessionary tax rate on qualifying income derived from their international trading or shipping activities. This status is renewable upon reapplication by the company after a specified period.
“The large number of recipients and extensions this year shows that companies are still confident of the long-term opportunities in the region,” says Mr Stephen Lee, Chairman of TDB. “Having chosen to use Singapore as their regional base to launch these investments, this further reflects Singapore's increasing attractiveness as an international trading and shipping hub.”
The AIT/AOT/AIS status will not only enhance the companies' stature and competitiveness in the global trading and maritime arena, but is also expected to generate substantial spin-offs in related ancillary sectors such as logistics, infrastructure development and financial and banking services. Together, the AOT, AIT and AIS companies have contributed almost S$ 3 billion in local business spending since the schemes were introduced in 1989, 1990 and 1991 respectively.
To date, over 170 companies have been awarded the AIT/AOT/AIS status. In 1997, the AIT and AOT companies conducted US$ 88 billion worth of trade through Singapore while the AIS companies, whose 300 ships trade internationally, have expanded Singapore's role as their business and operating base.
Four scholarships for local and overseas undergraduate and graduate programmes were also presented at the ceremony. Two of the scholarships were presented in collaboration with local companies, Lee Rubber Company Pte Ltd and Tropical Produce Co. Pte Ltd, both of whom also received an extension of their AIT status. (Please see Annex 2 for a list of scholars)
“These companies have shown a firm commitment to help Singapore develop its human resources to benefit the international trading community,” says Mr Lee. “TDB hopes that more companies will come forward to share its vision of a trained and dedicated workforce.”
Launched in 1995, the TDB Joint Scholarship programme has since awarded 11 scholarships. It aims to provide a ready pool of skilled manpower and expertise resources in the international trading sector to meet the challenges of a global trading environment.
