Infineon Technologies Announces the Industry's Smallest 144Mbit RDRAM and Begins Sampling 64Mbyte RIMM Modules
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 13, 1999--Infineon Technologies Corporation (formerly Siemens Microelectronics, Inc.) today announced first functional silicon of its 144Mbit Rambus® DRAM (RDRAM®) component while simultaneously shipping 64Mbyte RIMM(TM) module samples to Intel, Rambus and other major customers.
This new 64Mbyte RIMM module supports the Infineon 72Mbit RDRAM component. The Rambus memory standard provides a bandwidth of up to 1.6 Gigabytes per second and will be designed into computers based on new chipsets scheduled for availability in September 1999.
High-volume production of Infineon's 144Mbit and 128Mbit RDRAMs starts in Q3 and Q4, 1999, respectively. The 256Mbit and 288Mbit RDRAM devices are currently under development and will be available in the year 2000. To satisfy immediate customer needs for RIMM modules, Infineon will ramp up the 72Mbit production in summer 1999.
Based on the 144Mbit and 72Mbit RDRAM components, Infineon Technologies will offer 64Mbyte, 96Mbyte, 128Mbyte and 256Mbyte RIMM modules at 600MHz, 711MHz or 800MHz data rates during 1999. All components and modules will be available with and without error correction (ECC). Future versions will be based on customer demand. The standard non-ECC memory with a x16 configuration is targeted mainly at the desktop and notebook market. RDRAM devices with ECC have two additional bits to support error correction and will be used primarily in workstation and server applications.
Technology and Manufacturing Background
Infineon's technological leadership is underpinned by the fact that its 72Mbit, 128Mbit and 144Mbit RDRAM components are the smallest in the industry. The small chip area allows Infineon Technologies to quickly ramp up volume, decrease the learning curve towards greater economies, and achieve a sufficient yield of fast devices -- three critical success factors in the introduction of the new Rambus memory standard.
Infineon Technologies manufactures all RDRAM components with a chip-scale package using a center-bond ball grid array. While center-bonding has become the industry standard for 128Mbit and 144Mbit RDRAMs, Infineon Technologies was the first supplier to use center-bonding and is the only vendor presently using this method with the 72Mbit device. The company is now benefiting from the early adoption of this technology in the ramp-up of 128/144Mbit production and 256/288Mbit RDRAM development.
Availability
The 72Mbit (HYB25R72180C) and 144Mbit RDRAM (HYB25R144180C) devices will be available in production volumes beginning in August 1999 and September 1999, respectively. Later this year the company will also launch its 128Mbit RDRAM (HYB25R128160C) device.
