Herc...pardon me if I giggle at your prediction when youseem to have so many questions about audio CD technology as it stands now. =o) Please don't take offense though!

Anyway -- yes, you do need to purchase a CDR or CDRW drive to write to CDs. Yes, they can plug into your parallel port...or almost any other port for that matter. However, there are a few companies that are doing a "build-your-own" CD that you choose songs -- they burn the CDs and send them to you. So this way you can get music on CD without a burner...of course there is a charge.

Anyway WAV is not the format that is on manufactured CDs. The format on those is called "redbook" or something like that. It's never used anywhere else because it's terribly inefficient.
