<<there are rumours (discussed in earlier messages) that Rhapsody/PowerPC will run NT faster than WinTel>>

It's important to distinguish between the NT OS and NT *applications* (word processing, graphics programs, etc.) since the OS is simply the framework by which users move from one application (app) to another.

That distinction noted, MacWeek has reported that comparable programs (Mathematica, case in point) *now* run 80% faster under the NeXT OS on a Pentium Box.

Further, they extrapolated the speeds on Pentium (233 mhz) and PowerPC (300+mhz) systems projected to be available over the next 12 months and projected that the best available Rhapsody/PPC box will offer a 400% speed advantage over the best available NT/Pentium box running the same apps.

FYI, mhz for mhz the current Pentium Pro line is comparable to the low-cost/power 603e in performance. A 200mhz 603e is currently used in the 3400 laptop with a 240mhz version due in April. The 604e enjoys a 30% speed advantage over the 603e (a 240 mhz 604e = 320 mhz 603e.)

Remarkably, there's a the G3 low power (5 watts) version of the 604e due out. It doesn't have the graphics capabilities of the current 604e and it's not as cheap to make as the 603e but it should push PPC laptop performance into the stratosphere!
