[ft]
hi dan,
thanks for posting the bloomberg ft news... worked a little on ft/orct today (also posting most of this on yhoo) .. fwiw (cut and paste etc) : ---
altho it feels like a done deal that alcatel will be getting the majority of the France Telecom contract, would think orct is not necessarily out of the running for a piece... altho it can be dangerious to read too much into the finer points of the wording in press releases, the versions of the FT news that i have seen, refer to adsl suppliers (plural)..
totaltele.com Message 10476303 (yours)
and eventually expect that all the major deployments will have more than one supplier... dt and bt have started out this way, and here in the usa, word has it that even the jpc are looking for second sources... so if this is the case:
FT is certainly familiar with orct as a company: in 96 orct was selling FT hdsl and still were last year as FT was included as one of orct's "principal HDSL end-users" .. and as far back as 96 orct shipped adsl to FT for testing... and in sept 97 @ Telecom Inter@ctive 97, Geneva, orct adsl was being demonstrated in the FT "show-stand":
"In a re-creation of their CAMILLE Project, taking place in Lannion, France Telecom (2260) is demonstrating Orckit's ADSL modem for fast Internet access and interactive multimedia transmitted by ATM-to-the-home..."
fwiw earlier this year, it was speculated (omer) that orct was chasing the FT adsl tender, as part of two different teams: orct with lu and orct with fujitsu... (this was apparently also the case for DT) .. due to french politics etc, agree with everyone that alcatel will get the lead, but would not be surprised to see the remainder shared... and think given orct's expertise and the stature of their "partners" in chasing this tender, once again (not surprisingly, given my bias) i think they've got a shot at a piece...
handicapping these orct partners:
it looks like LU is particularly strong in France with "approximately 2,300 people" lucent.com:80/intl/emea/france.html
but fujitsu/orct share their adsl silicon and (soon) integrated product which might be hard to beat on the price front... ---
am thinking tomorrow's cc might have some interesting "wrinkles" .. tho then again, this is orct and patience seems to be called for ...
and trust those car parts of yours fit.. ;) ...
and am still pull'n for bt/ fujitsu (orct) ...
