You're probably right: Two 100 meg tapes may not hold the contents of a one gig drive.

I doubt you could zip the needed files. You could, if you knew which ones were needed, but there's probably over a thousand files on your system.

As far as partitioning, each person must decide for themselves what will best suit their needs. If you decide to partition, the time to do it is when you're re-creating your system. (Unless you use Partition Magic.)

Best of luck with the job. One thing for certain -- when you're done, you'll have learned some stuff many people avoid.
