Insignia Solutions Joins MIPS 'Technologies' Windows CE Development Alliance

Jeode Platform Available on MIPS Processors

FREMONT, Calif., July 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Insignia Solutions® (Nasdaq: INSGY - news) announced today that it has joined MIPS Technologies' (Nasdaq: MIPS - news) Windows CE Development Alliance to further promote its implementation of the Jeode(TM) platform for MIPS-based(TM)® processors. The MIPS® architecture has the greatest number of processors optimized to run Windows CE and supports the most diverse range of applications. The Jeode platform is available initially for Java developers using Windows CE on the MIPS architecture, with support for other operating systems to be available on customer request.

The Jeode platform, Insignia's implementation of Sun's Java(TM) specifications, is ideally suited for MIPS-based Windows CE devices, including palm-sized and handheld PCs. The Jeode environment allows developers to create more reliable, efficient and predictable MIPS-based Windows CE devices that are enabled by the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine(TM)(EVM(TM)). Insignia is the first Sun licensee to deliver its own Java-compatible VM technology combined with Sun's Java class libraries to specifically address the needs of embedded device developers.

''The MIPS architecture is clearly the leader for Windows CE palm-sized and handheld PC markets,'' said Ronald C. Workman, senior vice president of marketing with Insignia Solutions. ''Consequently, our customers asked us to develop a port of Jeode to Windows CE for the MIPS architecture and we made it an early priority. We think that the Jeode platform can potentially open up a larger base of emerging Java applications to MIPS-based Windows CE powered devices and we're eager to use MIPS Technologies' Development Alliance as a forum to inform their semiconductor licensees and Windows CE device manufacturers about this opportunity.''

''We're pleased to see Insignia join our Windows CE Development Alliance,'' said Greg Stoner, manager of applications at MIPS Technologies, Inc. ''With the Jeode platform, Insignia addresses the needs of MIPS-based Windows CE devices with an implementation of Java that is ideally suited for palm-sized and handheld devices. Our customers can benefit from the Jeode platform because it advances the adoption of Java technology in the Windows CE market by addressing critical developer concerns, such as compatibility and performance.''

Insignia Solutions

Insignia Solutions is a leading provider of virtual machine technology that dynamically optimizes the use of available system resources. The Jeode platform is Insignia's independently-developed implementation of Sun's Java specifications and is specifically designed for embedded systems. At the core of the Jeode platform is the Embedded Virtual Machine (EVM), a runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and predictability in a small memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called adaptive dynamic compilation, the EVM can execute Java applications on average six times faster than interpretive VMs.

The Jeode platform is designed to run with a wide range of operating systems and target processors. It currently supports operating systems such as Windows CE, Windows NT, VxWorks and Linux, and processors such as MIPS, ARM, Intel x86, PowerPC and Hitachi SH.
