How do we know for a fact that the stories are not factual...
well that is a long and arguably tedious task to prove, but it goes something like this: at the time that the stories were recorded (ie written down for the first time) they had been passed down for nearly (according to the Bible) 500 years or more. Now, can you tell me if King Aurthor really had a round table or not? The point being that the stories grew and grew with each telling and essentially are most likely (knowing man's inability to recount even simple messages) embellished.
Add to this that FACTUALLY some portions of the Bible make mention of creatures and places which did not exist at the time the story was supposed to have taken place.
Add to this the FACT that some of the people did not exist (as far as can be proven).
-We may disagree on who wrote the book of Job, but Job did exist at least. Whether someone can be cured by faith is also not in question. And whether over hundreds of years the story had been changed should not be in dispute.

-Let me ask you this: if the original word Yahweh was unpronounceable by the early Jews how did it ever get passed from one generation to another by way of mouth? Answer: it got changed when it was/before it was written down.
Reason: people had to be able to at least see what was meant by something that was heretofore unseeable/unpronounceable and generally UNHEARD. (one would also note the dispute over Yahweh, Jehovah, or I AM being the pronunciation for this word written to represent God)

I would note that I do not disagree that all scripture is good for teaching lessons... as long as we all understand that some are religious lessons and not history lessons.

and as far as what God intends for Man: I would not typically presume to know the mind of God, but since you pondered the question to me I will answer thusly -
God intends for man to serve him as a friend. God in return wishes to give man his friendship. But God is still God, and man is still man.
