It has to do with these little mitochondrion cell-within-a-cell things that are in most of our cells. They are independent entities with their own DNA, which act as symbiotic power plants for the larger cell which encompasses them. At conception, these are passed only from the mother, so you can trace back maternal lineages by examining mitochondrion DNA.

Examination of "eve's" mitochondrion DAN revealed relatively few mutations with all people sampled today. so it's not a great reach to say that all people were descended from her.

Back to topic:
So, Nostradamus must have been descended from her as well :-)
