Fixed broadband combined with Bluetooth might obviate many wireless calls. But an equally strong argument can be made that third-generation wireless solutions will remove the need for fixed connections entirely. That argument is based on the fact that third-generation wireless solutions (based on the ITU's IMT-2000 standard) support significant data speeds-five to 10 times the 28.8 Kbps that many telecommuters rely on today. Tomorrow's Web phone will be able to make voice calls via the traditional wireless phone network (1) or to place IP telephony calls (2) routed via gatekeepers (3) and gateways (4). When it comes time to surf the Internet or check e-mail, the laptop simply connects via Bluetooth (5) to the Web phone, which in turn is connected via the 3G wireless network into the global IP network (6). The laptop can then connect to a Web site or via the corporate VPN to internal corporate servers (7). The 3G wireless approach is conceptually elegant, but is likely to be at least a couple of years behind the fixed alternative.
