That art now appears in two places: (1) garage sales and (2) Ebay. The problem with contemporary art is that the reason people are buying it is because its trendy and they (some buyers with money) want other people to see that they have expensive recognizable (by artist) art on their walls. Unfortunately, it like furniture..... pay a lot but try to sell it a month later and you will be lucky to get 1/2 your money back.

I find that careful research and knowing enough consultants, conservators, and fellow collectors will help you make a good purchase for a fair price. Pick up a copy of American Art Review which is published bi-monthly. Email the galleries that advertise and get on their mailing lists for exhibits and auctions. You will start getting a ton of art material to begin your research. Get a box of file folders and begin to organize your research. Also, if you know of a particular book, try Amazon.com for out-of-print research books.
