Lemme tell you about a lot of cranking. My first big motor (also Johnson) I bought rebuilt and bought a new control unit to go with it. So, it's effectively a new motor and the most unholy starter you've ever seen. Once it starts, it runs like a demon, and as long as it doesn't get too cool, it restarts. I finally had a ground problem and took it to the boat doctor. He loves it, best motor in the history of motors etc. etc. etc. Can't understand what my complaint is because it starts as soon a he cranks it. Even demo's it - "you hold the key right here for the choke, and then you turn it the rest of the way blah blah blah." So, now I know the secret, it's got an electric choke that has a trick! But alas, the nasty SOB sits in it's pristine white paint and still won't start. Toward the end of summer, the starter solenoid went out and the neighbor and I open it up for a peek. Well, you have to push the key in to turn it, and my neighbor says she's dead as a doornail. Then what the Hell IS CLICKING I wonder. Mystery resolved. You have to turn the key and hold it pushed in to activate the choke. Why didn't you say so? Went back in a rage to look at the destructions for the $250 control box, and not a freaking peep about that little detail. I guess everybody else knew, huh? Mike |
