Believe it or not I almost always use altavista. one thing that people don't seem to do is use the extra characters like

1. quotation marks that make a phrase appear in the specific order as in "three word phrase"

2. plus sign to require a word (+word) or phrase (+"three word phrase")

3. a minus sign to not include documents that contain a word (-word) or a phrase (-"three word phrase")

but the biggest thing people seem not to do is construct dumb sounding very long queries to focus in on something

such as pga tournament golf courses in Texas -Dallas and stuff like that. you'd be surprised how often such things work...in other words that search i would be looking for good golf courses in texas except for those in dallas.
