On India, and their oppressively high tax on Sat Phones:

In the brave new world of the net (and a telephone capable of being used anywhere) why can't Airtouch or Vodaphone just sell G* phones via the web and ship them into India?

The Bahamanian telco got slaughtered when it used its monopoly power to rake in cash and the citizens of the Bahama's responed by getting US cell phones with Miami area codes that were cheaper and could call the US orders of magnitude cheaper than an International Call from the Bahamas.

It seems like Airtouch would have no problem shipping phones to India and just billing in US dollars against customer accounts that a carried as though they were in the US.

Remember people, these phones work everywhere. G* has satellites above India, like it or not. (And they can put a Gateway Station in any neighboring country - just tell Pakistan that a station would piss off India and Pakistan would problably pay for the gateway themselves.)
