Nope I am not saying that men could ever beat women in this event, or most events. However, the better team, men or women is not the issue. The issue in the USA for sports is who wins. We have seen this in the olympics, lets take gymnastics as an example since it was mentioned. Does anybody think winning in gymnastics last time around for the US team was anywhere near as difficult as it would have been in the 70s when the eastern bloc dominated the sport with people like Olga Korbut and Nadia? We had no presence in gymnastics for years and if Cathy Rigby got a bronze it was great as far as the US public was concerned. Even after the Soviet Union fell apart they still would be winning if it weren't for Bela Koroli (sp?) the coach that we imported from Romania.

But it doesn't matter to the US public whether somebody is truly better than everybody else in the field or not. What matters to us is who wins. When Marylou Retton won, it was a boycotted olympics! She did good but that was hardly a fair comparison. And in skating, Kristy Yamaguchi can barely do a triple axle, compared to Midori who is considered to be the top athletic skater ever... nonetheless Midori screwed up in the olympics and Kristy won and thats what matters.

So here with this world cup, we know that the Latin American countries where the top men come from don't produce the same level of female players. There are top female players coming from Africa, and Europe however. Nonetheless it is certainly not the same level of play for men vs. women. No matter, because the womens team won, the mens team for whatever reason cannot win, therefore, women's soccer will remain the "real" soccer in this country for a while.
