I agree with you about not improving lies and not taking mulligans, etc. I got in with a golfing crowd that took cheating to a level of a saturday night live skit or a monty python movie.

the ring leader put down a minimum of four balls from each shot. Like a one man captain's choice (scramble). He would drive four balls, pick the best one. Improve his lie. Hit four shots from that point. Pick the best one...lift clean and place even in sand traps, that he raked and teed the ball up in. He would drive with top flites for distance, hit irons with titleists to get spin. If you got near to his score, he would cheat some more. I got sick of that mess. They would encourage me to cheat and I would have none of it. If I whiffed a ball, that counted...etc.

If I shot a 93 or something and he shot a 77, you can believe I beat him by 600 to 700 shots. He had a "foot wedge"...just an incredible satire on the game.

Life is too short to be a cheater.
