Robert, the LMDS/MMDS regions of the spectrum do not share the same levels of high susceptibility to atmospheric conditions and other environmental artifacts surrounding the positioning and stability of the antennae, at least not to the same degree or in the same ways, as optical signals do. And whereas distances for the former are measured in miles, the latter is rated in hundreds of meters, and decreases rapidly with increases in singnaling rates. To increase the powers of lasers beyond these limits would be to introduce highly hazardous conditions to human eyesight. Frank
