Intel will probably outperform the S&P. CSCO likely will. MSFT I hope not. WCOM maybe not. Intel will be fine when the net requires faster microprocessors and this will happen in the next few years since Intel will have not too many competitors at that time. What will be interesing is how the non-PC market (STBs, PDAs, WebPads etc) plays out.

I tend to agree with you that 'sure bets' tend to flop. But note Intel has plenty of detractors.

Intel still has a huge advantage over many of the other big techs in that they have a huge portion of the market and they are not 'software vulnerable' as MSFT is. Plus of course the server market. Plus of course they all have huge cash balances and can buy out anyone at anytime time - Intel generates 1 billion in 'other income' each year. Plus technology is the bricks and mortar of the 21st century and it is difficult to see it totally flopping.

(I'm still listening to the call and someone may have hit it - they are implying that the 400 mil reduction was inventory reduction at the distributors. If so, this is a very good thing since Intel and anyone else has to clear out old inventory when they have a new product coming in on high volume - Pentium 3. There will always be a perturbation during a product transition.)
