John G. Thanks for this post and also the excellent thread on stocks trading at cash value. Since I am somewhat risk adverse I find your ideas very useful.
Relative to the ocom play, what broker do you use? Brown and Co. will not short stocks under 5. I was very interested in warrant hedge strategies about 10 years ago but found it difficult to identify stocks with shortable stock and almost impossible with short warrants. Most hedge opportunities involved over valued warrants. The definitive book on this(published in the early 60s and probably out of print) was by Edward Thorpe titled Beat the Market. He became famous for his Beat the Dealer book which ushered in the card counting at Las Vegas. I believe the same sort of hedges can be created with leaps sold in ratios against the stock.
Also I want to thank you for your kntk idea on the cash thread. I have been acquiring the stock at 7 7/8. Seems very very likely that merger will complete for 8.29 by the end of August.
If you or anyone else has a source of information on the structure of mergers I would appreciate knowing such things as:
When does a company have to go to ftc? I have shares of aflx which is being bought by innovex and the prospectus is targeted for 8/3 or just one month after the proposal.
What is the normal length of time for a prospectus to clear sec?
I wondered if anyone new of a government or other pub which discusses these kinds of issues?
