REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (CBS.MW) -- ExciteAtHome said Wednesday it signed consumer products giant Unilever for its broadband advertising service.

AtHome (ATHM: news, msgs) said Unilever (UL: news, msgs) agreed to make broadband ads a "substantial component" of its interactive advertising and marketing strategy to its AtHome's cable TV subscribers.


Shares of AtHome fell 1 to 48 15/16 on Wednesday. Unilever stock lost 3/16 to 39 1/16.

The alliance represents the largest investment any consumer goods company has made to date in ExciteAtHome's broadband advertising programs, the company said in a statement.

The move comes as Internet advertisers face fewer responses to traditional banner ads on the Web. Broadband ads, which contain more sound and video capabilities, are seen as a way to boost consumer interest.

The companies said the move followed a successful broadband campaign for Lipton, one of Unilever's many brands.

The 1997 Lipton effort, "garnered significant results and exceeded expectations on all important brand communication goals," the companies said.

"This alliance is strategic for us since ExciteAtHome will provide us with valuable knowledge about how consumers are using next generation media, such as broadband Internet services, to evaluate and purchase consumer goods," Tony Romeo, chairman of Unilever's North American Interactive Brand Center, said in a statement.

Unilever is one of the world's largest consumer products companies with sales close to $50 billion with brands such as Lipton, Wish-Bone, Lawry's, Ragu, Klondike, Breyers, Wisk, Q-tips, and Dove. >>>>>>
