The shock underachiever in DMO is Cisco, the erstwhile king of Internet technologies, which entered a combined bid with Alcatel....

....Johnson says Telstra's deliberations tend to confirm the Gartner view that Cisco faces an uphill battle for credibility among telcos.

"At the carrier-grade end of the market, this is probably not an unexpected outcome," the analyst says.

Cisco managing director Gary Jackson admits the outcome is deeply disappointing for the gung-ho Internet vendor. But he insists there are still plenty of opportunities for Cisco to work with Telstra....
