Michael, I couldn't agree with you more, even as I acknowledge that the sort of thing Chris was citing does affect each person's personal effectiveness. As you may know if you have been lurking before posting, I am basically libertarian--not as much of an ideologue as Terry, but he has his own agenda.

Yet I have never forgotten when I was very young and my parents had a small dinner party. The two little girls in their cute pjs said good night to the guests and went to bed like little paragons. While trying to go to sleep, I overheard one of the guests say to my father, "They are adorable and really intelligent. What a pity you don't have a son."

My father's response made an enormous difference in my life. What he said was, "Why should I want a son? Daughters are better because there is so much more. I can play basketball with my daughters; I can teach them to box (he was an amateur boxer); and then they get cleaned up and are a whole different experience. Boys just stay being boys."

The power of words to affect perceptions! When I married, back in '76, I did not change my surname, not as a major political statement. It was simply an expression of pride in who I already was, personally and professionally. I never had to be a "radical feminist" because I was there already and had no ax to grind, no quarrel with men.

I have been told over the years that I am either a mutant or an alien. A few words at precisely the right moment changed my life--because I heard a parent speak them.
