Eric and all, an excellent article in the NYT on Motorola and their evolving role for the future. It may be password protected, but I think it's a free subscription.

nytimes.com

I tried to read the Xypoint article and poke around their web site last night, but I didn't make much out of it as I should have been in bed sleeping.

I think the issue of making all these mobile devices secure is a problem that goes deeper than many are willing to say. Just like the X-Files, they often say be careful what you say as this is not a secure line.

General Magic is doing interesting things with an all IVR (Interactive Voice Recgonition) based system. It's cool, but they have serious security issues. They can do a lot of access to company databases, but the IT people won't let them behind the firewall.

The Wireless Knowledge people are trying to make an authentication through a central access point. Not sure how this will really differ, but it sounds possible. There are also some interesting biometric solutions using voice. Maybe even put a thumb print reader into the phone, but in the end the issue Xypoint is addressing is a big one.

If you've done any study of secure access, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Regards,

Mark
