Manfred, VaxGen was not allowed to use more monkeys. The animal activists combined with the scarcity of these creatures made it impossible to get more than a couple for ANY experiment. To compensate, Dr. Francis injected the vaccinated chimps with SYRINGES FILLED WITH HIV. These were doses incalculably more than could be expected in casual infection. The monkeys were protected 100%. I will tell you one thing you can take to the bank. No one in VaxGen is lying or being deceitful. They might be wrong. This could be a wrong trail. But they are not trying to fake you out. Don Francis is the most honest, public-serving, self-sacrificing person in public service today. He has never made any $$. For most of his 54 years he has been wandering through Africa vaccinating villagers against smallpox. He was a public servant at the CDC (For what? 50K a year?) for 25 years. He drives a jalopy. He is a down-to-earth guy who wants only to help rid the earth of this scourge. And he is brilliant. VaxGen has NEVER lied to ANYONE. Your information about the phase III trials is wrong. They CAN NOT change the "ingredients." The current bivalent formulation is the one they HAVE to go with to the end of the phase III trials. So there will be no delay. At this point, it will work or it will not. You state that they are in the very early phases of trials (despite phase III) but, believe me, that is not true. Phase III is THE END. 95% of companies NEVER make it to phase III. The FDA would not allow them to change the phase III trials. Finally, the "breakthrough" infections you refer to during phase I and II were, overwhelmingly, due to strains of HIV that WERE NOT COVERED BY AIDSVAX. If you read the prospectus carefully you will see that AIDSVAX does not pretend to be all-inclusive; however, it does protect against the MAJOR strains. And VaxGen has the technology to ADD antigens to the vaccine to protect against other strains. It will eventually protect everyone. It is an honest company. There are no lies or deceits. They may be wrong, in the end (although I do not believe that) but they will never have lied to you. GPSite.
