It is such a complex situation. A large percentage of my family is in health care, and I am, unfortunately, familiar with a lot of ways to scam insurance companies, not that I ever did so.
For one example, a lot of Drs. on the 80/20 plans will take whatever the insurance company will pay and write off the 20. It's called "Noope" - No Out Of Pocket Expense. That's illegal, by the way, but if a Dr. offers it, I don't think you're doing anything wrong to take it.
For another example, a local Dr. just got busted for insurance fraud because he got reimbursed from insurance companies for prescribing diet pills, which they don't cover, by saying he was treating people for high blood pressure and fatigue. I've got news for whoever busted him, he's not the only one, I went for a few years to a diet pill Dr. who did the same thing, and she is Chairman of the American Association for Bariatric Medicine (treating people to lose weight) and is on Good Morning America and quoted in Redbook and Ladies Home Journal. But not many people can afford to write a check for medical treatment.
And it seems like the insurance companies want to return the favor and scam the patients. |
