Don't we already know the composition of asteroids and comets through spectroscopy? Isn't that how we know there is platinum, nickel, and other metals in asteroids?

True as far as it goes, but recognize that spectroscopy works only for the surface reflecting/emitting light. Asteroids and comets are more than skin deep. For example, recent photo images suggest, tantalizingly, that some asteroids have a "surface rubble" effect that may be a composition different from that of the interior. I personally do not subscribe to the "Everything I need to know about life I learned by looking at it through a telescope from 80 million miles away" school of thought.

This latest NASA boondoggle just may discredit them for good.

Boondoggle? The amount of money may seem large, but it's a very small mission by government standards. And, it's pure research, but pointing toward a future where private industry can take up the slack. That's PERFECT. Hell, man, you can't even build a hotel in Las Vegas for that kind of money -- trust me.

Let's get NASA out of the trucking business -- this R&D is what they SHOULD be doing.
