TORONTO, Jul 14, 1999 (The Canadian Press via COMTEX) -- Charles Schwab
Canada Inc. is the first brokerage in Canada to enable its clients to
execute trades over a wireless network.

The U.S.-based firm's PocketBroker service made its debut Wednesday at
Comdex, the computer industry trade show in Toronto.

Paul Bates, Schwab Canada's chief executive, demonstrated the
PocketBroker using a digital PCS phone from Qualcomm Inc. and a Palm V
palmtop computer from 3Com Corp. The trade was placed over the Bell
Mobility digital data network.

''This is really important,'' Bates said. ''How many investors wanted
this? A lot.''

Schwab Canada and many other firms have used the Bell Mobility data
network to deliver customized information, such as stock alerts, to
consumers using digital PCS phones. The PocketBroker service is the
first two-way application to reach the market -- so far only in
Ontario.

Schwab said it is working with wireless network operators in other
provinces to roll out the service nationally as soon as possible.

Schwab Canada customers are not assessed extra fees for placing trade
orders over the wireless device, although they may pay a fee to Bell
Mobility, which charges about 15 cents a minute for airtime.

The transmission of financial information and trading data is protected
by security software from Certicom Corp. of Mississauga, Ont.
