Curt, I was under the impression that the first incarnation of IDSL used the full budget of 144 k, including the 16k D channel. If memory serves me correct, this was a deal that involved UUnet as the driver, and Ascend (or was it COMS?) as the first supplier, about two years ago. Also, this service leverages off the availability of the NT (NIC) cards that were used for ISDN, due to the already high availability of that line side technology. It was an expedient which obviated retooling for the mfgr, and in some cases the need to go out and buy additional wares for those who were already using IDSN, I thought (although I have some problems envisioning the latter).

I had not heard that the port side of the end office switch was being leveraged, rather that the unit terminated in a RAS device and sent to a router upstream. I'll look into it some more. Thanks for the reply, Frank
