ZIFF DAVIS INC (14-3/16, before open) late Wednesday said it retained Morgan Stanley Dean Witter to explore strategic alternatives, including alliances, mergers, and the sale or joint venture of all or some of the company's businesses. The move follows a decision by Softbank, Ziff-Davis' greatest shareholder, to focus exclusively on Internet properties. "Softbank has revised its strategy to focus on companies that operate totally on the Internet platform, we are evaluating a number of our investments," Masayoshi Son, Softbank president and CEO, said.
