PBS swapped donor names with Democrats

By Laura R. Vanderkam
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

Congressional Republicans canceled a "markup" for a public broadcasting reauthorization bill yesterday and threatened to cut funding after learning that a PBS station in Boston swapped donor names with the Democratic National Committee last year.

The swap came to light when Jody Black of Wellesley, Mass., sent a $40 check to WGBH-TV, the PBS Boston affiliate, to thank them for their children's programming, according to a May 8 article in the Boston Globe. She included the name of her 4-year-old son, Sam, with the donation.

Later, Mrs. Black received a questionnaire from the DNC, and a fund-raising letter addressed to Sam Black, whom the station and the DNC assumed was her husband. Wondering why the DNC would ask for money from a 4-year-old, Mrs. Black, a registered Republican and former corporate lawyer, traced the solicitation back to the PBS affiliate.
