When somebody supoenas AOL for a user's identity, AOL sends the user a FedEx to inform the user.

I know this because yesterday I received such a FedEx from AOL. I had sent an anonymous email to the SEC, giving them information about company X. (I figured the SEC might be interested, because they had temporarily halted the trading of the stock).

I don't know why the SEC didn't just reply to my email and tell me they wanted to talk to me, which I will of course be happy to do, but for whatever reason they subpoened AOL to get my identity.

AOL's FedEx told me that they would reply to the SEC, providing them my identity and address, after about 8 days. It also included a copy of the subpoena.

The reason I mention this is that it illustrates how AOL handles subpoenas in a perfectly reasonable way. I don't see why SI can't bother to automatically contact its users, too.
