United Microelectronics, Taiwan's second biggest microchip maker, said today that it was planning a $3 billion, advanced-12-inch-wafer fabrication plant in southern Taiwan.

United Micro said the plant, located in the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park in southern Taiwan, was part of the company's ambitious 10-year $15 billion project there.

Construction of the new plant will be completed in the fourth quarter of 2000, the company said.

United Micro said 12-inch-wafer plants are the wave of the future for the industry, and the project would enable the company to become a leader in made-to-order foundry chipmaking.

It did not say how the project would be financed, nor did it give other details.

In May, Taiwan's largest microchip producer Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing and Mosel Vitelic announced plans to build 12-inch-wafer plants in Taiwan.

United Micro in June merged with four of its subsidiaries in a move to streamline operations and boost profits.
