You're right. DLRN (distance learning) communications software used for v-c tends to run free of charge, one way or another. There must be a value-add component here of the Microsoftian genre of add ons and extensions to the base product, somewhere, in order to ensure cash flow for the publisher. Possibly student-centric middleware that includes subject matter-specific content/screen features, or something along those lines.
