NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Cyberian Outpost Inc. (COOL) shares rose 17.4% Thursday amid a flurry of market speculation sparked by recent Web takeovers.

Shares of the online computer and software retailer recently were up 2 1/16 to
13 15/16. More than 3 million shares of Cyberian Outpost traded hands Thursday
morning - more than six times normal daily trading volume.

Keith Menzel, an analyst for John G. Kinnard & Co., attributed the rise to
merger buzz generated by the rash of Internet mergers and buyouts announced in
recent days, especially the $400 million merger between online computer retail
rivals Onsale Inc. (ONSL) and Egghead.com Inc. (EGGS).

"I think you have some excitement about those recent deals," Menzel said.

Some Wall Street traders attributed the rise in Cyberian's share price to
speculation that it may be a takeover target.

The same conjecture has made its way onto Internet message boards. Cyberian
shares also were being heavily discussed on chat rooms catering to day traders,
speculative investors who trade shares of a stock over the course of a day to
take advantage of subtle price changes.

A spokesman for Cyberian Outpost declined to comment on either the move in
stock price or the online takeover chatter, citing a company policy against
responding to market speculation.
