Yes, CCD are locked into mid-70's technology and 3" fabs -- very specialized and the only US consumer player is Polaroid.

APS is CMOS based and the original devices were run through ORBIT for less than $100k.

I am curious about the patent position. Does OGPS have a licence? I forget the inventor's name (though I saw him give a talk on APS about four years ago -- Steve R(something)?). He has a private start-up in California. I know he was collaborating with Jim Janesick who is still at JPL.
