France Telecom Joins NTL in Bid for C&W's U.K. Cable Assets
The consolidation craze in the UK is heating up. UK cabler NTL said it is in discussions with Cable & Wireless about a potential deal that would transfer “certain” assets of subsidiary C&W Communications to NTL, lending credence to a report by the Financial Times that NTL had bid $12.5bln for C&W Comm's UK cable business.

If NTL's bid is successful, the MSO said it would double in size to cover 11.5mln HHs, or 50% of the UK, and serve about 2.3mln telephony and 2.15mln cable subs, enough to shore up its battle with satellite TV rival BSkyB. NTL's takeover plans got a shot in the arm when France Telecom announced it would invest $1bln in NTL, giving France Telecom a 10% stake in the cable operator. It also looks as though France Telecom can give NTL and its bid for C&W Comm its full, undivided attention after announcing it will sell its 2% stake in Deutsche Telekom after DT's bid for Telecom Italia failed.

Meanwhile, don't count Telewest out of the bidding war. It's been in talks with C&W Comm for about 3 months.
