It is possible that the sentence is grammatical (not grammatically correct) but I think it is a lie. I have supervised and directed several hundred doctoral dissertations and masters theses, and spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours advising and suggesting improvements to the writing. Perhaps half of the students were not native speakers of English. I remember turning back the first draft of the dissertation of a student who is now a rather famous Japanese economist, along with a printout of several hundred particles ("the"s,m "an"s, and "a"s) asking him to scatter them liberally through out his work (which he did). I can assure you that every thesis with my signature on the title page was well edited, clearly written, and a serious work of legitimate scholarship. I was always known as being far too relaxed in getting students through because every student who ever started a doctoral thesis with me finished and received his Ph.D. degree. Vassar is far more selective and rigorous than most colleges. I don't believe that you can truthfully say that when you picked theses at random you got incorrect and badly written theses. Until I see some examples from you (you must have them in your files) I will have to say that I believe you are a liar. Perhaps some one else could drop by the Vassar library and sample a few pages (at random) from a few humanities theses (at random). One who libels graduates students at Vassar might not be trustworthy to select his own examples.
