Chinese Users Double In 6 Months To 4 Million

[16 JULY 1999] The Chinese Internet population has doubled from 2.1 million in December 1998 to 4 million in June 1999, according the latest semi-annual Internet survey conducted by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC).

Managed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, China's most prestigious academic institution, CNNIC is a quasi-official body modeled after InterNIC in the US with similar functions such as assignment of domain names and IP addresses, directory and database services, and education and information services. It is

Over 52,000 Internet users in China participated in the study, which measured demographic, usage and preference data.

The CNNIC survey indicated that the amount of users accessing the Internet outside of the work unit is growing and that the consumer base is expanding.

Forty four percent of the survey's respondents access the Internet from home, and forty six percent of respondents pay for their own Internet access.

The survey showed that most online users in China are highly educated and have above average income. Eighty six percent of survey respondents said they have a college education or above and seventy nine percent of survey respondents have a higher than average income.
