Toyota ''sees merit'' in merging its cellular phone subsidiary IDO Corp. with DDI Corp., Toyota's head of information technology, Susumu Miyoshi, told Bloomberg News. IDO offers cellular services between Tokyo and Nagoya, the only area not covered by DDI. A merger would create a powerful rival to NTT Mobile Communications Network Inc., the world's largest cellular phone company and a unit of NTT Corp., the biggest phone company. It would also help Toyota develop ''smart cars,'' vehicles that use telecommunications to select the least congested route and on computers to control acceleration, braking and parking. ''If the two companies merged, they would be able to combine marketing, advertising, and research and development, resulting in cost savings,'' Miyoshi said. |
