Penguin Computing to Offer Full Line of AMD-based Servers
Business Wire - July 16, 1999 12:44
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 16, 1999--Penguin Computing announced today that it will become the first Linux company to offer a full line of servers running on AMD (NYSE:AMD) processors. The servers, known as the Adelie Penguin series, will be introduced at the CA-World '99 conference at the New Orleans Convention Center on Saturday, July 17.

"We want to be AMD's champions in the Linux community and we are extremely proud to be the first company to offer AMD servers," said Sam Ockman, President of the fast-growing San Francisco hardware company. Penguin Computing was the first company to exclusively sell computers running only the ultra-reliable Linux operating system. The company was also the first to introduce a 2U Rackmount with Four Hot Swappable Hard Drives. The new AMD models can be used as web-servers, file-servers and database servers and are also available as rackmounts.

Penguin Computing will be selling computers in the Adelie series with RAID, hot-swappable power systems, up to 768 Megs of RAM, 10,000RPM hard drives, error-correcting memory, hot-swappable hard drives and Penguin Computing's innovative cooling systems that maximize system lifetime. "We want to build computers that will last through an earthquake, and we think these AMD models can," added Ockman.

This announcement also represents another indication of Linux's growing acceptance to mainstream computer professionals. "CA-World is taking the arrival of Linux very seriously. They are providing a specific pavilion area for Linux companies where our booth will be located. Our appearance and announcement is another milestone in the Linux revolution," says Andrew Kaufman, Penguin Computing's Director of Communications.

Offering over 3,000 technical session and hands-on labs, CA-World is one of the most expansive vendor-sponsored conferences in the IT industry. Exhibitors include major industry heavy weights like 3Com (NASDAQ:COMS), Panasonic, Toshiba, Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ:SUNW), and Compaq (NYSE:CPQ). "The conference is truly a who's who of the movers and shakers in the business world, and it is fitting that we will be offering a whole new line of products powered by a company as respected as AMD (NYSE:AMD). Penguin looks forward to continuing its effort to open doors and to show the value of Linux to the business world," declares Kaufman.

The CA World Conference, now in its 5th year, runs from July 18-23 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. Keynote speakers for the event include CA Chairman and CEO, Charles Wang and former United States President Jimmy Carter.

The new series of computers is named after the Adelie Penguins species, one of only two found in Antarctica. With their white fronts and black backs, it is often said that they resemble men in their dinner suits.

Penguin Computing is one of the world's largest and fastest growing companies selling customized Linux hardware and complete Linux solutions. Penguin Computing offers tech support in 16 languages from 9am-5pm PST. In addition to its new Adelie line Penguin Computing also offers computers running Intel processors.
