My thought is that the coincidence in time and place between your doing unaccustomed construction work wearing construction boots, and having a discolored toe, makes it more likely than not that the discoloration is the result of some unnoticed injury. But what do I know?

Toe melanoma would be a cruel, if risible, fate. Just think of the mourners, trying to keep a straight face when the grieving widow explains your fate. Have you ever considered that perhaps the Universe is laughing at you behind your back?
