If they get the look of the interface right the first time we shouldn't have to do this again for a long time. Just tweaks here and there.

I agree, but the unfortunate thing is that the designers seem to have gotten too much right the first time. Pity they didn't start with gray and move over to the current scheme when the complaints rolled in. Oh well. Too late now.

I mentioned last week that Hotmail uses similar colors, but it's a far different service with not much chance of confusion. The blue and gray -- although probably necessary by now -- does not do much to distinguish SI from others. In fact (and this is the reason it's turned out to be popular, I believe), it will make SI look more like sites with a similar purpose.

It is, for instance, exactly the same color combo used by Motley Fool's message boards and close to the color combo used by Yahoo's message boards. Fortunately, the SI design is cleaner than both and distinguishes itself in that way.

While it's true that the brown highlight color is similar to what's used on RagingBull, I see very little similarity between the two. RB uses a dark green as their contrast color. Their pages are yellow, have a narrow boxed column for messages, and have navigation links that are as baroque as those used by the two Yahoo sites.

As CheekyKid pointed out long ago, the SI beta design is closest to something called www.stockhouse.com, but the colors (in all suggested combos) are far different. Stockhouse also fails to give their messages the breathing room that they still have on SI (although getting choked here by one of the unfortunate -- but also necessary --changes to the original design).
