Bin Laden Ready to Strike?

<< U.S. officials believe bin Laden, who has been in hiding since missile attacks on his Afghanistan base camps last August, has regrouped and is in the advanced stages of planning a major attack.

Evidence from wiretaps and satellite surveillance indicates there is a great deal of movement of equipment and personnel within his network.

"The threat level is very high right now. The expectation is that bin Laden is going to light one off very soon," said Vincent Cannistrarro, a former CIA counterterrorism official.

Expectations of an imminent attack were heightened yesterday when an "open letter" to bin Laden from radical Sheik Omar Bakri Muhammad was posted on the Internet and read in Friday prayer services at several European mosques.

"The opportunity is here and we must not let it pass by ... the Muslim brothers are firm in their Jihad, so we must not lose time aimlessly and act now," the London-based Bakri, an ideological comrade of bin Laden, wrote in the letter. >>
