G'day all - hi Steve, if the anti-Beijing feeling is what President Lee is counting on, he may miscalculate badly. I think most people in the US couldn't care less the China-Taiwan relationship so long as it doesn't rock the world economies. And indeed, there is sign, subdue that it may be, that people see Taiwan is the instigator this time around. Maybe that is why China actually is not doing anything disastrous besides raising the voice. Why, if her opponent wants to stick its foot in its mouth, she will enjoy it <G>.
To qualify my thinking, I actually think Taiwan is legitimate in demanding the negotiation be on equal footing. It is a prosperous entity. It splintered from China b/c KMT lost to the CCP. Additionally, KMT has to watch its back against the other taiwanese party [something Democrat, I think, which has more taiwanese in its mix.] In that sense, maybe President Lee is limited in his move. Who knows, maybe there is even understanding from Beijing to play along
