My understanding: Until just recently (a couple months) Linux was very difficult to install. Now the value added companies have added GUI's and it's supposed to be very friendly, even better than Windows in some respects. Ars-technica reports avidly on alternative OS's. Big thing now is hardware and software support (drivers and apps). It's an amazing story IMO. w
