The best forecaster of the past few years, Laszlo Birinyi, head of Birinyi Associates, a Connecticut research firm, predicted that the Dow would hit a seemingly outlandish 12,000 by year-end, a mark that now seems very achievable. "Our indicators are still bullish," Birinyi says. His favorite, Dow money flows, shows that investors on balance are still buyers of the 30 Dow stocks.

He notes that there was a lot of excitement about cyclical stocks in April and May, when the group took off. But the group has faded since then, hurting the Dow, which has trailed the S&P 500 in recent weeks. The Dow has a heavy representation of industrial stocks. Birinyi's current favorites based on money flows include Boeing, PepsiCo and Apple Computer.
