Thursday June 17, 7:55 am Eastern Time Omnicare sees Q2 EPS below analysts' estimates COVINGTON, Ky., June 17 (Reuters) - Omnicare Inc. (NYSE:OCR - news), which provides pharmacy services to nursing homes and other institutional health care facilities, said Thursday it expects second quarter earnings to fall short of analysts' expectations, largely because of reduced reimbursements under the new Medicare pay system.
Omnicare forecast second quarter earnings of $0.25 to $0.30 per share, compared with the analysts' consensus estimate of $0.33 to $0.34.
The company said the change in Medicare from a cost-based to a fix-based system had caused lower-than-anticipated occupancy rates in many nursing homes and fewer patients overall requiring complex care.
''While we are frustrated that the implementation of PPS (Medicare's Prospective Payment System) has created near-term volatility in our earnings, we nonetheless remain convinced of the strength of the underlying fundamentals of our business and the soundness of our growth strategy,'' the company said, noting the rise in demand for pharmaceuticals because of the aging of the U.S. population.
