Larry,

The System Standby setting will turn off both your hard drive and monitor(s) after the specified period of inactivity.

The individual settings for monitor and hard drive allow you to turn one or the other off before the standby time kicks in.

Choose a setting for each of the three and then save that group of settings as a "scheme" by giving it a name in the Power Schemes dialog box and hitting "save".

It's kinda confusing and you have to play with it a little to see how it works.

I'm happy to help with anything, but don't forget Windows Help and also the context sensitive help you get by dragging the "?" from the upper right-hand corner of some screens. Actually Windows Help is not too bad, it gives a more complete picture than the context sensitive little tidbits.
