SarkieBug,

Your comments help a lot. I hope you are right that "the general investor does appreciate SI for what it is."

It often seems (from my point of view) that many investors want Yahoo and the other discussion sites to do well... that's why they became active boards in the first place ====> SI members went over there and got them going. Then, the boards everyone helped to create turned out bad, because they are mismanaged and many members came back to SI (started spending more time at SI).

My concern is how the discussion market grows. Many people are shaped by what they are told by the Media. The Media says Yahoo is the biggest and the best, so new investors probably go over there first, read a few discussion messages and go YUCK!. This discussion stuff really does suck just like the Barrons article about financial chat said.

Additional challenges:

The Media doesn't like to report on sites that CHARGE!

The Media does like to promote sites that are free and feed them big hype numbers because it's exciting.

Potential new members send us hate mail because we charge and then they go on to explain that we do not operate SI correctly, that we are stupid, and the competition is going to beat us.

There is a lot of hate in this world and I believe many people choose lower quality and free over high quality and pay (even though it doesn't make logical sense). It's an emotional decision.

Many people will not use SI because we are seen as too controlling and are therefore resented for that. At free registration sites with no controls they can do anything they want.

There are quite a few SI members who link from SI to the free discussion sites thus promoting them and weakening SI by association.

When SI was the only financial discussion site on the Web, we were the only game in town and there wasn't any confusion as to what a financial discussion site should be.

I'm not saying these are absolutely correct observations. My comments above are concerns that I have.
