Dell to Launch U.S. Internet Service, Downplays
Talk of Acquisition
July 16, 1999

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Dell Computer Corp. Chief Executive Officer
Michael Dell Friday said the direct-sales computer giant will soon offer
Internet-access service in the U.S. But he also downplayed speculation that
the company may acquire Internet-service provider MindSpring Enterprises
Inc.

Dell told shareholders attending the company's annual meeting to expect an
announcement soon regarding the company's Dell.Net service in the U.S.
Dell launched the Internet service in parts of Europe last month. "You will
see Dell aggressively enter the market for Internet access" in the U.S., Dell
said, although he didn't cite a specific date for a product launch.

Investors think Atlanta-based MindSpring might help Dell with its
Internet-access plans because MindSpring has said twice within the past
month that it is talking with an unidentified party for a possible deal. Last
week, MindSpring canceled a scheduled July 13 meeting with analysts,
citing the discussions.
